I have two small kids but no iPad to entertain them. Old fashioned? You could say that. Cheap? Haha. Possibly.
But the truth is, I don't want my kids to be looking at a screen everytime they want to fight boredom. I would prefer that they read books or draw and write. I would rather they play like we used to, with three dimensional toys and things. I don't mind if they play with boxes or plastic bottles and pretend they were something they really weren't. Even they don't mind that.
I want them to use their imagination. I want them to use their hands and feel textures. I want them to turn real pages and count how many books they've read.
Wouldn't you find it quite bothersome when you want someone's attention and they're just looking down on a screen? Seemingly hearing you but only half listening.
Today's generation is easily drawn to gadgets. Even online communication replaces real time talk. I want my kids to spend time with me more than a gadget, in whatever form. I want them to learn by interaction. I want them to learn by being creative.
I won't even go deep into the disadvantages of playing with gadgets or even its technological advantages. My philosophy is simple. And that is keep it simple.
Our parents survived raising us without gadgets. I think we'll survive raising our kids without them too, however challenging it may be in this day and age.
